Mental Health Awareness: An Essential Chapter for Human Beings

Introduction

In the midst of the busyness, stress and uncertainty of modern life, the importance of mental health has become a very crucial issue. Like physical health, mental health is an essential part of our overall well-being. However, many people are still hesitant to talk about mental health in society.  People hide their mental anguish in their minds for fear of shame, fear and social stigma. It is this silence that sometimes makes the situation more complicated. Therefore, mental health awareness has taken the form of a social movement that aims to make people aware,  build empathy and pave the way for getting the right help at the right time.

What is Mental Health?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO)  definition, mental health is a condition in which a person is able to fully realize his or her own potential,  cope with the normal stresses of life,  work productively, and make a positive contribution to society. Mental health is not just the absence of mental illness, it is the name of a complete and balanced mental state.

Mental health problems include depression,  anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and more. These problems can occur at any age, in any class of people.

Mental Health in the Context of Bangladesh

The mental health situation in Bangladesh is very worrisome. According to the National Mental Health Survey, about 16 to 18 percent of adults in the country suffer from some form of mental illness. But in comparison, the infrastructure of mental healthcare is very limited. The number of psychiatrists across the country is only a few hundred, which is inadequate compared to the population.

In addition, mental health problems are still seen as a sign of weakness in society. Many people in rural areas consider mental problems to be “insanity” or “jinn seed” and take them to a sweep or a kaviraj instead of treatment. There is also a lack of awareness in the city. Many people feel ashamed to seek help because of the negative attitude of family and society.

Causes of Mental Health Problems

There can be multiple reasons for mental health problems. They can generally be divided into three categories:

Biological factors:  Chemicalimbalances in the brain, genetic predispositions, and hormonal fluctuations are among the causes of mental health problems. If someone has a mental problem in the family, the risk increases in the next generation.

Psychosocial factors: Childhood trauma, family quarrels, relationship complications,  loneliness, workplace stress, economic uncertainty, and social inequalities can cause psychological problems. Trauma can have long-term effects, especially in children and adolescents.

Environmental factors: Poverty, natural disasters, war or conflict, social isolation, and unhealthy living also affect mental health. In the modern era, excessive use of social media, cyberbullying and digital addiction are also creating new levels of stress.

Importance of Mental Health for Young People

Today, young people are the biggest victims of mental health crises. Exam stress, uncertainty about careers, complexity of relationships, the urge to prove themselves on social media, all these combined with today’s young people are living under severe mental stress. The rate of depression and anxiety among university students in Bangladesh is increasing alarmingly.

Many young people suffer from fear of failure,  the burden of family expectations, and the pain of social comparisons. But many people are breaking down inside without getting the right help. In this situation, it is very important to introduce counseling services in educational institutions and make students aware of their mental health.

The Importance of Mental Health Awareness

By raising mental health awareness, we can achieve several important goals:

Remove stigma: Awareness can remove the misconceptions and stigma that have developed around mental problems in the society. When people understand that mental illness is as real a condition as physical illness, they should not hesitate to seek help.

Early  detection: Conscious people can recognize signs of psychological problems in themselves or loved ones early. The sooner the problem is identified, the more effective the treatment is.

Social Solidarity: Mental health awareness helps to build a compassionate society where people stand by each other. This social cohesion itself is a great psychological support.

Improving quality of life:  Good mental health improves performance, relationship quality, and overall quality of life. Through awareness, people learn to take care of their mental well-being.

Important Steps For Mental Health Problem

Some habits are very effective in maintaining good mental health:

Regular exercise: Studies have shown that regular exercise increases serotonin and dopamine levels in the brain, which improves mood and reduces depression.

Adequate sleep: Lack of sleep severely damages mental health. Seven to eight hours of quality sleep every day is essential for mental well-being.

Balanced diet: Nutritious food is very important for good brain health. Eating omega-3-rich foods, green vegetables, and drinking enough water has a positive impact on mental health.

Social connections: Spending time with loved ones, maintaining friendships, and participating in social activities relieves loneliness and provides mental strength.

Mindfulness and meditation: Meditation and mindfulness practice keep the mind calm, reduce anxiety and help you focus on the present moment.

Seek professional help: When it becomes difficult to manage mental problems on your own,  you should seek the help of a psychiatrist or counsellor. It’s not a sign of weakness, it’s a testament to bravery.

The Role of Family and Society

Family plays the most important role in protecting mental health. A compassionate and open family environment where people can speak their minds is the biggest safeguard for mental well-being. If family members listen to each other,  support each other without judging, then the mental crisis is greatly reduced.

The responsibility of society is no less. Creating a mental health-friendly environment in the workplace, providing counseling services in educational institutions and conducting mental health awareness campaigns in the media are all part of the responsibility of the society.

Benefits of Mental Wellness

Good mental wellness helps us lead a happy and balanced life. When we are mentally healthy, we can manage daily stress and challenges more effectively. It improves our focus and productivity at work or in studies. Mental wellness also helps us build stronger relationships with our family and friends. It allows us to get better sleep and stay physically fit. Moreover, having a positive mind gives us the confidence to face uncertainty and enjoy every moment of life.

The Role of Government and Policy Makers

The government’s active role in improving mental health services is essential. These include increasing investment in the mental healthcare sector,  increasing the number of trained mental health workers, incorporating mental health services into social health insurance, and effectively implementing the National Mental Health Policy. If mental health services are spread at the community level, people in remote areas will also get this benefit.

Conclusion

Mental health awareness is not a luxury, it is the core responsibility of a civilized society. It should be our goal to change that it becomes normal to say “the mind is not good” and not to be ashamed. Like physical well-being, mental well-being deserves equal attention and care.

Every person should take care of their mental health, be close to those close to them and not hesitate to ask for help when needed. Building a healthy mind is not only about making your life beautiful, it is also the most important step towards building a healthy,  compassionate and humane society.
